The decision came in the wake of a military coup announced last Wednesday in the Portuguese-speaking West African nation, a development that has heightened political tension and uncertainty.

Diplomatic sources said Dias da Costa sought refuge at the embassy after receiving credible intelligence about plans to eliminate him amid the ongoing power struggle.
