Wike Suspends FCT Education Secretary Over Fake School Closure Memo

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has suspended Danlami Hayyo, the mandate secretary for education, following the circulation of a memo directing government schools in the FCT to shut down on November 28, 2025.

The controversial memo, reportedly signed by Aishatu Sani Alhassan, instructed all public senior secondary schools to close citing “urgent security concerns.” Principals and school heads were allegedly told to end academic activities immediately and ensure students’ safe dismissal.

However, the FCT administration quickly dismissed the memo as false. In a statement, Lere Olayinka, senior special assistant on public communications and social media to the FCT minister, clarified that “no such decision was taken at any level of the administration.” He described the viral claim as “misleading and untrue,” assuring parents, students, and school authorities that the academic calendar remains unchanged.

Olayinka added that Nancy Sabanti Nathan, acting head of service, has been directed to take disciplinary action against Alhassan in line with civil service rules.

The FCT administration also confirmed that measures have been stepped up to ensure safety around schools, including a resumption of operational sweeps and other security initiatives.

“The minister assures residents of adequate security across the territory and urges everyone to disregard false information regarding school closures,” the statement added.
