The Catholic Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Benue State, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, has declared that Nigeria has become the deadliest country in the world for Christians.
Bishop Anagbe made the statement on Thursday while giving testimony before the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa. The session was examining former President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over religious persecution.
Speaking before the US lawmakers, the bishop said the situation has worsened since President Trump placed Nigeria on the CPC list on October 31, 2025.
He alleged systematic attacks against Christians, noting that “Fulani militants and Boko Haram have intensified assaults on Christian communities, often carrying out killings with impunity. More Christians are being killed here annually than in the rest of the world combined, yet the perpetrators face little or no accountability.”
Bishop Anagbe warned that the violence has caused widespread displacement, destroyed farmlands, and worsened the humanitarian crisis amid growing food insecurity. He cautioned that without urgent intervention, Christianity in Northern and Middle Belt Nigeria could face near extinction.
“Nigeria, already on the CPC list, must now face decisive action to stop the ongoing atrocities,” he urged.
The testimony comes amid mounting international concern over religious violence in the country.
