Enugu North Senator, Okey Ezea, Dies In UK

Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North Senatorial District, has died in the United Kingdom.

The Labour Party lawmaker reportedly passed away while undergoing medical examinations. Until his death, he was the only federal lawmaker from Enugu elected on the LP platform.

Although the family is yet to issue an official statement, tributes have begun to pour in from colleagues in the National Assembly.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) described Ezea as “a good man—wise, gentle, and prayerful,” noting that his encouragement sustained her through difficult moments.
“Enugu North Senatorial District, Kogi Central honours your Senator and mourns with you,” she wrote.

Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, said the news of Ezea’s death came as a shock.
“Senator Okey Ezea was more than a colleague; he was a brother and friend. We shared a deep bond strengthened by our Catholic faith. His humility and integrity stood him out,” Kalu said.

Ezea, a lawyer and businessman born on August 11, 1963, was notable for sponsoring the bill seeking the creation of Adada State as well as advocating for a Federal University of Agriculture in Uzo-Uwani.

He made political history in 2023 when he defeated former Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to clinch the Enugu North Senate seat.

His passing has thrown the political community in Enugu and beyond into mourning.
