Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has claimed that DR Congo resorted to voodoo during Nigeria’s 4-3 penalty shootout defeat in the CAF World Cup playoffs on Sunday.
The regulation and extra time had ended 1-1, but Nigeria fell short in the decisive spot-kick stage. Chelle alleged that a DR Congo official engaged in black magic to influence the outcome of the shootout.
“During all the penalty sessions, the guy from Congo did some voodoo,” Chelle said, adding that it contributed to his nervousness.
Asked what he witnessed, Chelle explained: “Yeah, something like… I don’t know if it’s water or something like that [he was spraying it up].”
The incident reportedly sparked a confrontation between Chelle and the DR Congo staff member after the match.
With this victory, DR Congo will represent Africa in the Intercontinental playoffs scheduled to hold in Mexico in March.
