El-Rufai Tasks Northern Governors on Digital Investment, INEC on 2027 Tech Deployment

Former Kaduna State Governor and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has urged governors in the North to embrace technology as a strategic tool for development and to position the region for global competitiveness.

El-Rufai spoke in Abuja at the premiere of Fasahar Zamani, a 12-episode Hausa-language digital technology series produced by Blue Sapphire Hub and funded by the UK Development International. The series, subtitled in English, seeks to deepen awareness and appreciation of emerging technologies across northern Nigeria.

The former governor lamented that the North remains behind in adopting digital tools and innovations, stressing that state governments must take deliberate steps to identify and support young tech innovators.

> “Northern Nigeria is yet to come to terms with the reality of the tech age,” El-Rufai said.
“Governments must identify digital entrepreneurs, provide them with training and seed funding, and help them transform ideas into jobs. This is how we place Nigeria firmly on the technology map.”

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt more robust technological systems ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying digital processes would strengthen transparency and voter confidence.

Country Lead of the UK Global Digital Access Programme, Idongesit Udoh, said the project aims to integrate underserved communities—including women and persons with disabilities—into Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.

Founder of Blue Sapphire Hub, Maryam Lawan, explained that the series showcases real-life applications of technology, from agriculture to healthcare, designed to inspire northern communities to embrace digital skills and unlock economic opportunities.
