A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a final order restraining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Justice Peter Odo Lifu, in a judgment delivered on Friday, barred the PDP from holding the convention scheduled for November 15–16, pending full compliance with the party’s Constitution and guidelines.
The court action followed a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who argued that he was denied the opportunity to purchase a nomination form for the office of National Chairman of the party.
Justice Lifu held that the PDP is under strict legal and constitutional obligation to ensure that all eligible members are allowed to pursue their aspirations within the party. He described the denial of Lamido’s nomination form as “contrary to the party’s rules and principles.”
In addition, the court ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not supervise, monitor, or in any way facilitate the Ibadan convention until Lamido is permitted to participate.
The ruling effectively puts the convention on hold, pending the resolution of the legal challenge, and underscores the judiciary’s insistence on adherence to party constitutions in internal party affairs.
