Senate United Behind Akpabio, Says Bamidele

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele yesterday dismissed reports alleging a plot by some senators to unseat the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Bamidele described the reports as false, mischievous and intended to create disaffection within the National Assembly.

Speaking with reporters in Abuja, the Senate Leader said there had been no discussion or move among lawmakers to remove Akpabio, adding that the Senate remained focused on national issues.

“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, nor any discussion around the possibility or otherwise of removing the Senate President from office,” Bamidele said.

He stressed that senators were united and would not be distracted from their legislative duties.

“We are totally united and have developed a zero-tolerance attitude toward distractions because there are urgent national issues we must attend to. Reports like that are calculated to cause confusion,” he added.

Bamidele’s clarification came a day after Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) also dismissed similar reports, describing them as baseless and unfounded.

Kalu reaffirmed the senators’ confidence in Akpabio’s leadership, saying there was no division within the chamber.

“Even if there were such attempts, we would never allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen,” he said.

He, however, admitted that there had been some tension in the chamber recently, which he attributed to “family misunderstandings,” noting that such issues had since been resolved.

Both lawmakers maintained that the Senate remains cohesive and committed to supporting the Akpabio-led leadership in advancing the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly.
