Ogun targets ₦500bn revenue in 2026 fiscal plan

— Abiodun vows to raise IGR to ₦750bn before 2027 exit

 

The Ogun State Government has set an ambitious target of ₦500 billion in internally generated revenue (IGR) to drive its 2026 fiscal plan.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this on Tuesday at the Treasury Board meeting on the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and the 2026 Budget held at the Obas Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Abiodun said Ogun, being Nigeria’s industrial hub, must fully exploit its proximity to Lagos and its vast landmass of over 16,000 square kilometres to achieve the target.

“This state has no business generating less than ₦500 billion annually. That must be our target,” the governor declared. “By the time we are leaving in 2027, Ogun State’s revenue should rise to about ₦750 billion. That is what ambition looks and feels like.”

He directed the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) to generate at least ₦250 billion of the total, while charging other key revenue agencies — including the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC), the Bureau of Lands, and the Ministries of Education, Science and Technology, as well as Housing — to intensify efforts.

The governor described every ministry, department, and agency (MDA) as a crucial piece in a collective puzzle that must fit together to achieve the state’s developmental goals. He urged them to present “bold and realistic” budgets that reflect the administration’s renewed vision.

Abiodun lamented that the state’s economic potential had not been fully tapped by previous administrations, noting that Ogun’s strategic advantage lies in offering what Lagos cannot — affordable land, industrial space, and a conducive business environment.

On the poor condition of Kara, near Isheri, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Abiodun reiterated his administration’s resolve to embark on comprehensive urban renewal.

“The new Ogun State cannot afford that place to continue to wear that look. You cannot be entering the new Ogun State and the first thing you see is an eyesore. There’s no better time to act than now,” he said.

The governor announced that an inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministries of Environment, Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Bureau of Lands, and other relevant agencies has been constituted to oversee enumeration, compensation, and relocation as part of the redevelopment effort.
