Shagari’s Last Surviving Wife, Hajiya Saratu, Dies at 89

The last surviving wife of Nigeria’s former President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Hajiya Saratu Shehu Shagari, has died. She was 89.

Her death was announced yesterday in a statement by Capt. Bala Shagari (rtd.), the late President’s eldest son and the Sarkin Mafaran Shagari.

According to the statement, Hajiya Saratu passed away around 3 p.m. on Monday after a prolonged illness.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Saratu Shagari, the last surviving wife of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the statement read.

Capt. Bala described his late mother as “an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength, who lived a life of dignity and service.”

Hajiya Saratu’s death marks the end of an era for the Shagari family, years after the passing of Nigeria’s first executive president in December 2018.

Funeral arrangements, according to Islamic rites, were held in Sokoto, with family members, dignitaries, and well-wishers in attendance.
