The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has raised alarm over what it described as a disturbing resurgence of violence in Ikire, following the killing of a young resident, Adesile Seebu, on Saturday.
The party, in a statement by its Director of Media, Hezekiah Oladele Bamiji (HOB), expressed deep concern over the attacks that have reportedly gripped the ancient town in recent weeks. It alleged that the crisis was being fueled by a supporter of the AMBO campaign team, identified as Akinkunmi Alabi, popularly known as Ojuyobo.
According to the statement, Ojuyobo was declared wanted during the 2023 general elections for alleged involvement in violent activities, but has “re-emerged boldly” and been linked to repeated assaults on residents in Ikire and its environs.
The party claimed that the suspect was recently seen in the company of the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) during his visit to Irewole/Isokan Local Government — an event it alleged was marred by harassment and assault on residents.
“The people of Ikire have shown remarkable patience,” the statement read. “But their safety continues to be threatened by the supporters of the AMBO group who appear emboldened by the absence of firm security action.”
The PDP called on security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to act swiftly to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“This is not about politics; this is about human life and community peace,” Bamiji said. “We urge the security operatives to move in immediately, arrest the perpetrators, and restore calm before the situation degenerates into a communal crisis.”
The party further demanded a full-scale investigation into the alleged network backing Ojuyobo and his associates, stressing that no one should be allowed to operate above the law.
“At a time Osun is enjoying renewed peace and purposeful governance, it is unacceptable for criminal elements to be allowed to plunge communities into chaos,” the statement added.
The PDP also sympathised with the family of the slain youth and residents of Ikire, calling for justice and stronger protection against future attacks.
