Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has described U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Nigeria as a “disgraced country” as wrong and misleading.
Trump made the comment a day after claiming that Christians in Nigeria are being killed with little government response. Following this, he designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and warned that the U.S. “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists.”
Reacting to the statement on X, Sani rejected Trump’s description, arguing that Nigeria does not deserve such a label. A member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), he said:
“Someday, future generations will read about all that we posted and ask where we stood on urgent and controversial matters. I want history to record me among those who outrightly opposed, rejected, and unreservedly condemned any act of Mr Trump’s foreign military aggression against my country under any guise or excuse.”
Sani emphasized that Nigeria, unlike some other nations, has no history of colonization, invasion, or large-scale plunder of other countries. “My country is not a ‘disgraced country’ and will never be. Anyone proud of their motherland will not accept it being called ‘disgraced’,” he added.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges over the past 16 years, Sani welcomed any genuine assistance to strengthen the country’s fight against terrorism. He urged the government to intensify efforts to protect citizens and secure the nation, which he described as “the only country we can live in without a visa.”
Sani also dismissed the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” as “falsehood and misinformation,” stressing that terrorists and bandits attack indiscriminately, regardless of religious affiliation.
