INEC Must Prosecute Electoral Offenders, Not Just Defend Petitions – Oshoma

Legal practitioner Mr. Liborous Oshoma has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to go beyond defending election petitions and take decisive action against electoral offenders.

Speaking on Arise Television on Wednesday, Oshoma said INEC can only reduce courtroom disputes over elections if it enforces transparency and holds violators accountable.

He welcomed the recent commitment by the INEC Chairman to make elections credible and less litigious but stressed that such promises must go beyond rhetoric.

“Everyone wants a Nigeria where elections are decided at the polls, not in courtrooms. We look forward to the day when INEC announces results and all parties accept them. But this requires action, not just words,” Oshoma said.

He noted that previous assurances from past INEC chairmen had often failed to translate into meaningful reforms.

Calls are growing from civil society and legal practitioners for the commission to ensure transparency, accountability, and a credible electoral process under the new leadership of Prof. Joash Amupitan.
