In a landmark gathering, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, met in Lagos on Friday to reaffirm their commitment to the unity and development of Yorubaland.

The historic meeting, convened by businessman Sir Kessington Adebutu as part of his 90th birthday celebrations, took place at the Eko Hotel Signature Building.

In a joint communiqué, the monarchs stressed the need for peace, dialogue, and collaboration among Yoruba people. They announced the establishment of a Joint Council of Yoruba Unity, a body dedicated to fostering cultural preservation, peacebuilding, and socioeconomic development across Yorubaland.

“Greatness for the Yoruba race can only be achieved through unity, dialogue, and collective effort,” the statement read.

The gathering, attended by prominent Yoruba leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural custodians, was aimed at strengthening inter-kingdom cooperation and encouraging others to emulate the spirit of togetherness demonstrated by the two thrones.

In their closing prayers, the Ooni and Alaafin sought divine guidance, peace, and prosperity for Yorubaland, Nigeria, and Africa. Sir Adebutu lauded the reunion, describing it as a milestone that would further peace and progress among Yoruba communities.
