The Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday, rejected a fresh bail application filed by the alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.

In a ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar dismissed the bail bid — the third since the commencement of trial — holding that the prosecution had been diligent in the conduct of the case. The judge noted that bail could only be favourably considered where the prosecution was found wanting in its duty.

Although he acknowledged Mamu’s complaints over ill–health, Justice Umar directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to convey him to any appropriate medical facility nominated by his defence counsel for proper treatment. He further ordered that Mamu be granted access to his family members in custody.

Mamu, arrested on September 7, 2022, at the Cairo International Airport by Egyptian authorities, was arraigned on March 21, 2023, on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism financing and related offences.

He is accused of facilitating ransom payments between families of victims of the March 2022 Abuja–Kaduna train attack and Boko Haram fighters, allegedly for personal pecuniary benefit.
