Unilorin Marks 50 Years, Graduates Nearly 12,000 Students

The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) is celebrating 50 years of academic excellence as it prepares to graduate 11,886 students at its 40th convocation ceremony.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), said the graduates span various faculties and programmes.

He disclosed that 316 students earned First Class honours, 4,120 obtained Second Class Upper, 5,939 got Second Class Lower, 1,078 bagged Third Class, while 11 students finished with Pass degrees.

The University will also confer 1,520 higher degrees, including 182 Postgraduate Diplomas, 916 Master’s Degrees, 188 Professional Master’s Degrees, and 234 Ph.Ds.

Prof. Egbewole described this year’s convocation as “particularly special” because it coincides with Unilorin’s Golden Jubilee celebration, scheduled for November 23 to 28, 2025.

“As Unilorin marks 50 years of academic distinction, we reflect on our achievements in nurturing leaders, advancing knowledge, and contributing to national development. We remain committed to sustaining excellence in teaching, research, and community service,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to TETFund for its continued support, revealing that the University received N2.56 billion to boost infrastructure, staff training, ICT, entrepreneurship, and career services.

The Vice Chancellor also commended the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), calling it a “lifeline” for financially challenged students. According to him, Unilorin has secured ₦1.59 billion under NELFUND for 12,983 students, including medical students.

Reiterating the University’s commitment to societal impact, Prof. Egbewole added, “Our 50-year journey reflects resilience, dedication, and relevance. We will continue to produce graduates who excel in their careers and contribute meaningfully to society.”
