Kanu Agitation: NCoS Declares Custodial Centres ‘Red Zones’ Ahead of Monday Protests

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has placed all custodial centres nationwide on red alert ahead of protests billed for today over the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement issued yesterday by its spokesman, Umar Abubakar, the Service said all correctional facilities have been designated “Red Zones’’ and warned that no unauthorised person should approach them during or after the demonstrations.

Abubakar explained that the directive was a precautionary step to avert security breaches and protect inmates, staff and national assets.

“The Service reiterates that correctional centres are restricted areas. Persons without official business are advised to steer clear to prevent untoward incidents,” he said.

He appealed for public restraint and urged demonstrators to act within the law and respect security cordons.

Separate groups have announced plans to hold rallies today — with some demanding Kanu’s release and others opposing it.
