The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all O’Level students, despite recent adjustments to tertiary admission guidelines.

Speaking in a statement on Sunday, the minister clarified that while the government has introduced more flexible admission criteria for higher institutions, this does not exempt students from taking the core subjects.

“Ordinary Level examinations are a requirement for entry into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The new policy is designed to broaden access and ensure that students are not unfairly excluded due to deficiencies in non-core subjects,” Alausa explained.

The minister added that the reform seeks to modernise the nation’s education system, align it with global best practices, and promote equity and inclusivity in tertiary education. While some courses may no longer require credit passes in non-core subjects, students must still register for and sit both English and Mathematics.

“The adjustment affects admission criteria, not the fundamental requirement to take these subjects. English and Mathematics remain essential for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning,” the statement said.

The Ministry, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, urged parents, students, and stakeholders to rely solely on official channels for verified updates on educational policies.
