The United States Embassy in Abuja on Friday issued a security advisory to its nationals ahead of a protest being mobilised by rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in demand for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In the notice, the Embassy warned that the planned demonstration — scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025 — may trigger road closures, heavy traffic and potential confrontations between protesters and security operatives around Eagle Square and the Central Business District (CBD).

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20, 2025, in Abuja. There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District,” the advisory partly read.

The march, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is expected to take off at 7 a.m. from Eagle Square, with protesters heading towards the Presidential Villa. Sowore had announced the date via his X handle on October 9, describing the event as a “historic and peaceful demonstration” to pressure the Federal Government to release Kanu, who has been held since June 2021 following his controversial rendition from Kenya.

The Embassy advised Americans in the FCT to stay away from protest corridors, avoid large gatherings and limit non-essential movement during the day of the march. It further recommended that schoolchildren and domestic staff resident outside Abuja remain at home.

“Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency,” it added.

Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court, Abuja, is expected to open his defence on October 23.
