Sanwo-Olu Flags Off ‘Omi Eko’ with 78 Electric Ferries to Expand Water Transport

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched the “Omi Eko” project to deepen water transportation and ease pressure on the roads.

At the unveiling in Lagos, the governor presented 78 electric ferries under the scheme, which he said is part of the state’s move for a cleaner, faster and integrated transport system.

Sanwo-Olu said the initiative aligns with his THEMES Plus agenda and will run alongside rail and road expansions to deliver a balanced mobility network for the city.

“This launch signals a shift in how Lagos will move people — with cleaner energy, technology and safer waterways,” he said.

He added that the state has strengthened its ferry fleet, enhanced waterway security and inaugurated a Waterways Monitoring and Data Centre to improve safety and service.

Fashola: Young Administrators Are Delivering

Former Lagos governor, Babatunde Fashola, praised Sanwo-Olu for sustaining the state’s intermodal transport blueprint.

He said young administrators such as LASWA Managing Director, Damilola Emmanuel, have shown competence when given responsibility.

Fashola also defended Lagos’ continued partnership with France, saying French agencies have a record of delivering on commitments.

EU, French Agencies Commit €360m

The “Omi Eko” project, driven by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is financed and supported by European partners — including a €130m loan from the French Development Agency (AFD), a €170m loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), and a €60m grant from the European Union.

France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, said Lagos is leading the continent in sustainable mobility deployment. EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot added that Lagos is setting a benchmark for Global Gateway projects in Africa, with the Lagos–Abidjan corridor in view for further expansion.

The initiative includes high-capacity electric ferries, digital ticketing, smart terminals and upgraded safety systems across the waterways.
