Obi: South-East Cannot Be ‘Captured’ Despite Wave of Defections

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed fears that recent defections by some governors in the South-East signal political domination of the region by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi emphasized that Nigeria operates a democracy, not a military regime where states can be “captured.”

“The people will decide where to go, not governors or senators. No party will capture or win any state just because it has a governor,” he said.

On the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the APC, Obi described him as a friend and said his decision reflected his personal political calculations.

“As for the alleged plan to capture the South-East, we are not in a military era where people are captured. Leadership is about earning people’s support, not imposing control,” Obi added.

Observers have expressed concerns that the wave of defections could tilt Nigeria towards one-party dominance ahead of the 2027 elections.

On Nnamdi Kanu’s Arrest

Addressing the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Obi said the detention was unnecessary.

“There was never a need to arrest Kanu in the first place. I have always maintained that issues of agitation should be addressed through dialogue and the rule of law,” he said, noting that legal processes should guide all such matters.

He also commended those advocating for Kanu’s release, saying their efforts align with his long-standing position on dialogue over confrontation.

On INEC Appointment

Obi further commented on the appointment of Joash Amupitan as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressing hope for free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.

“He’s a Nigerian, and we all want a new Nigeria where elections are credible. Those with competence, character, and commitment should be elected. He should protect his integrity while in office,” Obi said.
