Nigerian Army Takes Disciplinary Action After Soldier’s Role in Ondo Driver’s Death

The Nigerian Army has launched disciplinary proceedings against a soldier implicated in the death of a commercial bus driver at Akunu, Ondo State, assuring the victim’s family of its commitment to justice.

In a statement signed by Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, the Army described the soldier’s conduct as “unprofessional and contrary to the Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct,” promising swift action.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2025, when the deceased, who was travelling from Akure to Abuja, experienced mechanical issues with his vehicle near a military checkpoint in Akoko North-East Local Government Area. Passengers reportedly demanded refunds, and when one sought help from a soldier stationed at the checkpoint, the situation escalated into a physical confrontation with the driver.

“The soldier’s actions were clearly against the Rules of Engagement guiding his deployment,” the statement said.

Following the altercation, the Headquarters of 32 Artillery Brigade evacuated the victim to medical facilities, covering all treatment costs. An officer was assigned to accompany him during his care at Akoko, Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, and later at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he tragically died on Monday, October 14, 2025.

The Army expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), assuring that the soldier would face legal consequences. Major Irabor added that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings would be made public.

In addition, the Brigade has visited the family, pledged to fund burial expenses, and committed to supporting the education of the deceased’s children. A liaison officer has also been appointed to maintain close contact with the family throughout the process.

The Ondo State Government has commended the Army’s proactive response and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of the deceased driver’s children.
