In a significant political development, six Local Government Chairmen in Bayelsa State have formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligning themselves with Governor Douye Diri’s recent decision to leave the party.
The Chairmen, who operate under the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), announced their resignation at a press briefing held at the ALGON Secretariat in Yenagoa, pledging unwavering support for the governor’s move.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Lelei Tariye Isaac, Chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, cited the deepening crisis within the PDP as the driving force behind their decision.
He stated, “We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the people over the past one and a half years. While we were elected on the platform of the PDP, our loyalty remains with the governor, who has formally resigned his membership. As Local Government Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, Councillors, and other appointees, we fully support his decision and hereby resign from the PDP.”
Present at the press briefing were Hon. David Alagoa (Nembe LGA), Hon. Target Segibo (Southern Ijaw LGA), and Hon. Bulodisiye Ndiwari (Yenagoa LGA). Other Chairmen who also resigned include Hon. Isaac Onniye (Ekeremor LGA) and Hon. Golden Jeremiah (Ogbia LGA). Chairpersons of Sagbama and Brass LGAs, Alice Allen Tangi and Hon. Lucky Febo, were absent from the briefing.
Political analysts say the mass resignation of the LG Chairmen signals a growing exodus from the PDP in Bayelsa State and underscores the deepening crisis within the party.
