Northern PDP Loyalists Throw Weight Behind Jonathan for 2027 Presidency

In a decisive move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has officially endorsed former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its choice for the 2027 presidential election.

The endorsement was reached at the group’s 8th meeting in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, held from October 8–9, 2025, which saw representatives from all 19 northern states in attendance. Delegates deliberated on the state of the PDP and mapped strategies to reposition the party ahead of the next general elections.

In a communiqué signed by Hon. Yusuf Abubakar, Northern Coordinator, and Hon. Adamu Ahmed Narayi, North-West Zonal Secretary, Jonathan was hailed as a “symbol of peace, unity, and progress,” praised for his sacrifice and dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

The group dismissed questions over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, saying the matter had long been settled. “Goodluck Jonathan remains a loyal party man who never abandoned the PDP. He continues to command respect across the country,” the statement said.

Calling for a vigorous media campaign, particularly across the North, the coalition urged the party to promote Jonathan’s candidacy and emphasize the benefits of his return to power. The communiqué also commended PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum, for his ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring unity within the party.

However, the group expressed concern over the “negative conduct” of certain party leaders allegedly undermining reconciliation. The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was specifically accused of divisive actions that threaten party cohesion.

“Minister Nyesom Wike’s activities have been detrimental to PDP unity. His continued recruitment of party members to sow discord is unacceptable and must be addressed decisively,” the communiqué stated.

The Northern Support Group called on Damagum to take strict disciplinary measures against any party members sabotaging reconciliation efforts or collaborating with the ruling APC.

“The PDP enjoys strong grassroots support in the North. It is time to rebuild structures, restore the party’s glory, and ensure unity, discipline, and progress,” the statement concluded.
