Yakubu’s Tenure a ‘Huge Disappointment,’ Activist Tietie Says

Lawyer and activist, Frank Tietie, has described the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as a “huge disappointment” to Nigerians.

Tietie, speaking on Arise News’ The Morning Show, said Yakubu’s tenure was marred by inaction against electoral violence and malpractice.

“He just didn’t say anything and didn’t do anything,” Tietie said. “The failure to implement the promised electronic transmission of results in the 2023 elections is an unforgivable offense to Nigerians.”

Yakubu concluded his two-term tenure on Tuesday, handing over to May Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner, who will act as INEC Chairman. The handover occurred during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Tietie expressed disappointment that Yakubu, despite enjoying financial independence guaranteed by the Constitution, failed to act decisively in the face of blatant violations of campaign regulations.

“Professor Mahmood exercised immense independence, but he did not live up to expectations. Nigerians did him well, yet the legacy he leaves behind is one of disappointment,” he said.

Tietie further urged the incoming leadership to restore confidence in the electoral body and address the gaps left by Yakubu’s administration.
