Amnesty International has raised serious concerns over a surge in violent attacks by gunmen across Kwara State, warning that the attacks are creating a humanitarian crisis and depriving residents of their fundamental human rights.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the rights group condemned the killings, property destruction, and abductions in several communities across the state.

“The Nigerian authorities must take urgent steps to halt the escalating attacks by gunmen in some local government areas of Kwara State,” the organisation said.

Amnesty International highlighted a recent deadly attack on Oke-Ode in Ifelodun Local Government Area, which claimed more than 10 lives, and noted fresh assaults in Patigi Local Government Area. The wave of violence has displaced thousands, leaving many residents in fear.

“Ongoing horrific attacks are creating a humanitarian crisis and depriving people of their human rights. The actual perpetrators must be brought to justice,” the group added.

The human rights organisation further reported that attackers have burnt farms, killed livestock, and abducted women and girls for ransom. Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to take immediate action to protect lives and restore peace in the affected communities.
