The Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium, a landmark of governance and civic engagement in Abia, was revitalized under the administration of Governor Alex Otti. The iconic venue, once dilapidated, now stands as a befitting tribute to the late Premier of the Eastern Region.
Speaking at the commissioning, President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, described the renovation as a “miracle of transformation” and praised Governor Otti’s dedication to infrastructural renewal across the state.
“I lived and worked in Umuahia, and I witnessed firsthand the challenges here. Today, what I saw was nothing short of miraculous,” Umahi said. He added that both federal and state projects are aimed at improving the lives of the people.
He urged residents to emulate the late Dr. Michael Okpara’s brand of politics, which integrated the South-East into the nation’s governance, noting that the auditorium stands as a lasting honour to the late leader.
Governor Otti, while handing over the facility, recalled the auditorium’s dilapidated condition before 2023, saying: “This is the Michael Okpara Auditorium, which was left in a state of disrepair. Today, it stands as a structure worthy of admiration, a testament to quality workmanship and dedication.”
Also commissioned was the Port Harcourt Road in Aba, a major artery expected to ease travel, reduce transportation costs, and enhance trade activities in the region. Engr. Umahi commended Governor Otti for his consistent commitment to infrastructure development.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe lauded the project, calling it a fulfilment of government promises to improve the lives of Nigerians. Residents and commercial transporters in Aba expressed delight, recalling the difficulties posed by the road prior to its reconstruction.
“This road was practically unusable for years, but today, Otti has changed that story for us,” said Emeka, a local resident. Mr. Kingsley Nkwachukwu, a road transporter, said the newly accessible route will significantly reduce travel challenges that have persisted since 2007.
The commissioning ceremony drew several dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kanu, and other members of the National Assembly.
The projects signal a renewed drive for infrastructural and economic development in Abia State and the broader South-East region.
