Obidient Movement Calls for Arrest of Lagos NURTW Chairman Over Alleged Voter Threats

The Obidient Movement has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of Adekunle Mustapha, popularly known as Sego, the Lagos State chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), over remarks allegedly threatening voters in the 2027 elections.

In a viral video, Mustapha reportedly warned that anyone voting against the All Progressives Congress (APC) would face consequences. He said in Yoruba, “Anybody who makes mistakes in 2027 will be dealt with. Let them know that the APC is the party you’ll vote for, anybody who refuses to do so will meet us.”

Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement worldwide, recalled the violent incidents that marred the 2023 elections in Lagos, alleging that NURTW members attacked voters, particularly supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

“The attention of the Obidient Movement has been drawn to comments, captured on video, by the Lagos State NURTW Chairman Adekunle Mustapha,” Tanko said in a statement. “Sego threatened to kill anyone who votes against the APC in Lagos during the next elections. We recall with grief the violence unleashed by NURTW members during the 2023 elections, resulting in killings and maiming of voters, particularly supporters of Mr Peter Obi.”

The movement accused the APC of orchestrating threats and acts of violence as a desperate measure to retain power. Tanko urged President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and security agencies, including the police and DSS, to arrest and prosecute Mustapha.

He also appealed to the international community to take note of the threats, warning that continued inaction could lead to self-defence measures by citizens, potentially resulting in anarchy.

Mustapha Released on Bail

Following the video, the DSS invited Mustapha for questioning. He was later released on bail. In a statement, Mustapha denied threatening voters and said his remarks were misconstrued.

“This afternoon, I was invited by the DSS over false allegations that I insulted some groups while addressing our members. These rumours are baseless. I have always been a man of peace, and my messages are directed only to our members,” Mustapha said.

He appealed to the public to verify information before publishing and stressed his commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of NURTW in Lagos State.
