Ifeoma Onumonu Calls Time on Football Career at 31

Super Falcons striker, Ifeoma Onumonu, has announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 31.

The Nigerian international made the revelation on Saturday via a farewell post on her Instagram page, bringing an end to a 12-year career—four years at the collegiate level and eight years professionally.

In her emotional message, the Montpellier forward reflected on her early football days in the United States.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” Onumonu wrote. “I started playing football at eight years old, on a team called the Magic. We played in white, black, and green jerseys at the AYSO fields near my house. I remember how vast I thought the field was. I don’t remember if I played an actual position or even passed the ball. Now, 22 years later, I feel I have reached a natural conclusion to that journey.”

Born in California to Nigerian parents, Onumonu highlighted career milestones including her debut for the Super Falcons in 2021, participation in the 2023 World Cup, the 2024 Olympics, and helping Nigeria lift a record 10th WAFCON title earlier this year.

She also revealed plans to remain involved in football off the pitch.

“This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning. I am excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the skills and lessons learned from my time on it,” she said. “Thank you to all the staff, teammates, coaches, doctors, fans, and my incredible friends and family for your unwavering support through the years. Although my time as a player has ended, my love for this game will never waver.”

Onumonu represented Nigeria 32 times, scoring five goals. She became the first Super Falcons player to score against France and the first Nigerian female footballer to sign for Montpellier HSC in the French Première Ligue in 2024.
