Atiku, EU Election Team Meet to Push for Credible 2027 Polls

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has met with a high-powered European Union delegation led by Barry Andrews, a member of the European Parliament and head of the EU Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) to Nigeria during the 2023 general elections.

Atiku, in a post on his Facebook page on Friday, said the meeting was a follow-up engagement to assess the implementation of recommendations put forward by the EU team after the 2023 elections.

He expressed concern over the slow pace of electoral reforms, saying, “It is worrisome that two years down the line, we are yet to see indications that INEC is committed to an improved electoral process.”

The former vice president urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work closely with the National Assembly to enact laws that guarantee transparent and credible elections, where every vote counts.

“Atiku emphasized that continued support from civil society organisations, local and foreign Election Observation Missions, including the EU-EOM, is critical to ensuring genuine electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections. Only through credible elections can Nigeria safeguard its democracy and elect leaders who will drive unity and economic prosperity,” the statement added.
