FG cracks whip on Abuja–Keffi road project, orders night works to end gridlock

The Federal Government yesterday read the riot act to contractors handling the Abuja–Keffi Expressway reconstruction, directing them to work at night to end the unbearable gridlock crippling movement into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, who issued the order during an inspection tour of the site in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, said government will no longer tolerate excuses or delays.

He described the suffering of commuters as unacceptable, blaming the contractor’s slow pace for worsening the three-kilometre Abuja-bound stretch that has become a nightmare due to flooding and traffic snarls.

“This is a 43.6-kilometre project, and 41 kilometres are already completed. But this three-kilometre stretch into Abuja is holding the entire nation hostage. People spend hours in traffic daily. That is why I directed the contractor to mobilise fully, deploy at night, and provide a lasting solution,” he said.

The minister warned that the completion date remains sacrosanct, stressing that Nigerians will not accept any further excuses.

“We are not happy with the way people are suffering here. Let me be clear: this project is too strategic to be compromised. The contractor must deliver, and within time,” Goronyo said sternly.

While admitting that the Keffi-bound lane has seen progress, the minister said the Abuja-bound section requires urgent intervention, adding that government officials will be monitoring closely to ensure directives are obeyed.

The Abuja–Keffi corridor remains one of the busiest routes in the country, linking the North Central to the capital, but has become notorious for endless gridlock, especially during peak hours.
