Adeyemi Pledges Clean-Up, Professionalism in Federal Fire Service

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Olumode Adeyemi, has vowed to eradicate corruption and racketeering within the service while boosting operational efficiency and staff welfare.

Adeyemi made the declaration during his maiden official visit to the Abuja Metropolitan Command in Kubwa on Thursday, stressing that the FFS must operate with integrity and professionalism to effectively safeguard lives and property.

“Firefighting is a solemn duty that goes beyond a monthly salary. The era of lax standards and unchecked practices must end. Anyone involved in corrupt activities or job racketeering will face strict discipline,” Adeyemi warned.

In a bid to ease financial pressures on personnel, the CG announced an increase in the cooperative loan ceiling from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000. He also revealed that discussions have begun with the Accountant-General’s office to secure enhanced and stable budgetary support for the service.

Adeyemi further outlined reforms aimed at strengthening the service’s emergency response, including:

Expanding coverage to underserved areas such as Gwagwalada.

Recruiting additional pump operators.

Tackling long-standing vehicle mobility challenges.

Upgrading firefighting equipment.

“The public must have confidence that when they call the fire service, they are calling a professional institution that responds promptly, not one hindered by internal weaknesses,” he said.

The CG also announced the introduction of annual awards for outstanding officers and emphasized strict adherence to dress codes and professional standards.

FCT Controller of the FFS, Mohammed Anas, expressed full support for the new leadership, highlighting persistent challenges such as a shortage of trained pump operators, outdated station infrastructure, and logistical constraints.

With over 2,100 personnel, seven main stations, and 23 outposts serving critical federal institutions across Abuja, Anas described the proposed reforms as vital for enhancing fire safety and protecting national assets.
