Nigeria @65: Abuja Remains One of the Safest Places to Live, Says Wike

 

 

 

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday assured residents that Abuja remains one of the safest cities in Nigeria, attributing the development to deliberate security measures and the resolve of residents to live in peace.

 

Delivering his Independence Day message in Abuja, Wike praised the people of the FCT for their commitment to peaceful coexistence “despite a few distractions.”

 

He stressed that the capital city’s relative calm was not by accident, but the result of sustained efforts by his administration in collaboration with security agencies and the support of residents.

 

“Abuja has become one of the most peaceful places in the country, not only because of the security architecture we have put in place, but also because residents have continued to show zero tolerance for insecurity and have demonstrated readiness to promote peace in every part of the Territory,” he said.

 

The minister, however, warned against complacency, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to the police and other security operatives.

 

“I appeal to all residents to go about their lawful businesses, to watch over their neighbourhoods and to promptly alert law enforcement agencies of any unusual activities,” he added.

 

Wike also used the occasion to call for a peaceful and orderly build-up to the Area Council elections scheduled for February 2026. He reminded residents that the polls would set the pace for the 2026 electioneering season nationwide.

 

He said: “Come February 2026, the FCT will kick off the election season as residents head to the polls to elect new chairmen and councillors for the six area councils. I implore residents to campaign peacefully and to elect leaders with vision and capacity to attract development and prosperity to their people.”

 

The minister’s remarks came in the wake of the tragic death of 29-year-old Arise TV news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, who died on Monday after falling from the third floor of her apartment while fleeing from armed robbers.

 

Wike described the incident as “tragic and unacceptable,” pledging full support for the ongoing police investigation.
