Adeleke Frees 36 Convicts to Celebrate Nigeria’s 65th Independence
As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has granted amnesty to 36 convicts serving terms at correctional facilities in Ilesa and Ile-Ife.
The release, made under the powers of Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and upon recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, was formalized in a proclamation dated September 24, 2025.
The beneficiaries, mostly men and women convicted of minor offences including theft and conspiracy, had served substantial portions of their sentences. Twenty-nine inmates were from Ilesa Correctional Centre, while seven were from Ile-Ife Correctional Centre.
Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the Governor’s spokesperson, said the move reflects “the spirit of compassion, justice, and renewal which Nigeria’s Independence Day represents. This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for true rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start for these individuals.”
Governor Adeleke, in the proclamation, directed that all penalties and punishments accrued by the convicts be remitted and urged relevant authorities to implement the amnesty without delay.
