Fubara Steps In, Averts Emohua LG Workers’ Strike

Fubara Steps In, Averts Emohua LG Workers’ Strike

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has intervened to end a brewing crisis between Emohua Local Government workers and their Chairman, Chidi Llyod, prompting the suspension of a strike that had paralysed council activities across the state.

The workers had embarked on an industrial action on Tuesday following the dismissal of some council employees in Emohua Local Government Area last week. The strike led to the closure of all 23 council secretariats in Rivers State.

Fubara convened a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the Local Government Service Commission, and Chairman Llyod. He directed the parties to resolve their differences amicably.

In a joint press briefing at Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Israel Woke Amadi, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission; Chidi Llyod; and Comrade Clifford Paul, President of NULGE, Rivers State Council, commended the governor for his timely intervention.

Chief Amadi said, “His Excellency has given his mandate, and we are grateful for his intervention. We are committed to implementing the agreements reached today and appreciate NULGE’s cooperation.”

Chairman Llyod also affirmed the governor’s directive, stressing, “We will work together to implement the instructions. This is not personal; our goal is to ensure transparency in the system, and we appreciate the governor’s stance on this matter.”

Comrade Paul formally announced the suspension of the strike, urging all members to resume work immediately. “On behalf of NULGE State Council, I enjoin all our members to call off the strike as directed by the governor,” he stated.

The resolution comes as a relief to residents and local government staff, ensuring that essential council services resume without further disruption.
