FG Orders Probe Into Arise TV Anchor’s Murder

The Federal Government on Tuesday condemned the brutal killing of ARISE Television anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, describing it as a national tragedy and demanding a full-scale investigation.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a condolence message to ARISE News Chairman, Chief Nduka Obaigbena, said the crime was “regrettable” and a grievous loss to Nigeria’s journalism community.

In the letter signed by his media aide, Malam Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris said:

“We are deeply pained by the shocking and untimely death of your esteemed anchor, Ms Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. She was a vibrant and dedicated news anchor, consummate lawyer, and a model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences across Nigeria and beyond.”

The 29-year-old lawyer-turned-broadcaster was murdered on Monday in her Katampe, Abuja residence during a suspected armed robbery.

Her death, security sources told The Nation, has sparked renewed concern over rising violent crimes in the Federal Capital Territory.

ARISE News, in its own statement, described Maduagwu—fondly called “Sommie”—as “a cherished member of the ARISE family,” whose professional voice “engaged and connected with viewers across the country.”

The Minister assured that security agencies would move swiftly to unmask those behind the “heinous act” and bring them to justice.

Police authorities confirmed on Tuesday that investigations had commenced.
