Senate to Prioritise Local Government Autonomy, 2026 Budget as Plenary Resumes

Senate to Prioritise Local Government Autonomy, 2026 Budget as Plenary Resumes

The 10th Senate is set to resume plenary on October 7, with lawmakers expected to address critical national issues, including the contentious matter of local government autonomy.

Jackson Udom, Special Assistant on Media to the Senate President, stated this on Sunday while highlighting the key items on the agenda.

According to Udom, apart from local government autonomy, senators will also focus on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, electoral reforms, constitutional amendments, national security, and economic development.

“Part of the expectation when plenary resumes is for lawmakers to give legislative backing to the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy. This will secure both administrative and financial independence for councils nationwide,” he said.

Udom explained that, despite the landmark ruling, some state governors still maintain control over council funds through joint accounts, limiting local government independence.

He added that the 2026 Appropriation Bill, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to present before the end of the year, will also be a priority. “The budget is expected to tackle pressing challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and insecurity,” he said.

Other issues earmarked for legislative consideration include electoral reforms, constitutional review, and measures to enhance national security and peace.

Udom emphasised that the Senate leadership remains committed to rigorous legislative oversight to ensure transparency, accountability, and good governance across the country.
