Osun Assembly Directs Strict Control of Local Government Funds

Osun Assembly Directs Strict Control of Local Government Funds

The Osun State House of Assembly has resolved to tighten the management and operation of Local Government funds across the state, warning that any unauthorised access would be unlawful and subject to legal consequences.

At its plenary session on Monday, September 29, 2025, the House passed a resolution emphasizing that only officers officially employed under the Local Government Service Commission are permitted to sign for Local Government accounts.

In a press release made available to journalists, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, said the resolution underscores the Assembly’s commitment to transparency and good governance, adding that public funds must be protected and anyone attempting to circumvent the law will face full legal consequences.

The resolution, anchored in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Osun State Guidelines on Local Government Administration, 2025, and the Osun State Public Financial Management Law, 2020, further directs all banks and financial institutions operating in the state to comply strictly with the rules. Government agencies were also tasked with monitoring and enforcement.

According to the resolution, attempts by unauthorized persons to access Local Government funds will be considered aiding and abetting financial fraud, attracting full legal consequences.

The Assembly noted that the measure aims to safeguard resources, promote accountability, and ensure that funds meant for grassroots development are protected from abuse or diversion. Members of the public were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected infractions to relevant authorities.
