Benue Govt Cuts Transport Fares by 50% for Persons with Disabilities

In a landmark move to boost inclusivity, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has slashed transport fares by 50 per cent for all persons with disabilities using the state-owned Benue Links Nigeria Ltd.

Announcing the directive over the weekend, the company’s General Manager, Comrade Alexander Fanafa, said the policy takes immediate effect, adding that it reflects the administration’s commitment to social welfare.

The initiative follows the recent domestication of the National Disability Act in the state, a move aimed at empowering vulnerable groups and enhancing their participation in public life.

Fanafa noted that the reduction in fares comes alongside preferential treatment for disabled passengers, ensuring a more comfortable and dignified travel experience. “The Governor has been proactive in addressing the transportation needs of the people of Benue and Nigerians who use our services,” he said.

He further recalled that the company faced fleet shortages when the current administration took office. “The Governor donated 100 buses in November 2023, and we have since added 10 more buses and 10 sedan taxis to expand our services,” Fanafa stated.

The move has also had a ripple effect, compelling private operators in the state to lower their fares, further benefiting commuters across Benue.
