Bago: Niger to Deploy AI in Farming, Health Services

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has announced bold plans to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture and healthcare as part of his administration’s “New Niger Agenda.”

Speaking at a side event organised by the state government on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Bago said technology will be at the centre of Niger’s transformation drive.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Ibrahim Bologi, the governor disclosed that the state will, within two years, clear 2.5 million hectares of land for crop production and attract foreign investment through contract farming with Nigerians in the diaspora.

“With technology, Niger will drive food sufficiency, unlock the value chain and create massive opportunities for investors,” he said.

On healthcare, Bago revealed that his government will partner with development agencies to roll out AI-driven solutions, including telemedicine across primary healthcare centres, to improve access for rural dwellers.

The governor’s vision drew commendations from key figures at the event, among them World Bank Group Executive Director Zainab Ahmed, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Muhammad Sani Dattijo, and former CBN Deputy Governor Hajiya Aisha Ahmad Ndanusa.

They described his agenda as “visionary” and pledged their support to accelerate Niger’s agricultural and healthcare transformation.

The side event was themed: “Bridging the Gap: Subnational Development, Human Capital and Agricultural Transformation.”
