Peter Obi Prioritises Consultation, Equity Before Any Political Realignment
The Obidient Movement has emphasised that Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will consult widely before responding to any directive to leave his former party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The clarification follows an ADC statement directing coalition members to resign from other political parties before being formally recognised. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s interim national publicity secretary, described the move as a “final order,” though he did not specify a timeline for compliance.
In a statement on Friday, Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, noted that Obi had already aligned with the coalition’s adoption of the ADC platform. He added that this alignment applies to both the November 8 Anambra governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
“Our attention has been drawn to the ADC’s recent statement concerning coalition resolutions,” Tanko said. “While we remain committed to the coalition’s vision, it is on record that His Excellency Peter Obi aligned with the coalition’s position after the Anambra governorship election. This alignment extends to the 2027 elections. Obi, as a leader with a broad constituency, takes time to consult widely before making major political decisions, and he will do so before responding to any ultimatum.”
Equity and Fairness in Leadership
Tanko also raised concerns about the zoning of the ADC’s presidential ticket. He stressed that equity and fairness must guide such decisions, particularly since the presidency is currently held by the south.
“We are equally interested in how the party zones its principal offices within the coalition, as this ensures justice, fairness, and inclusivity, which are essential for effective mobilisation across the country,” he added.
He further said Obi is not driven by personal ambition. “His primary goal remains building a Nigeria that works — tackling poverty, improving the economy, and reforming healthcare, education, and security. These objectives reflect the core values of the Obidient Movement,” Tanko noted.
Background
Peter Obi joined the ADC-led coalition in early July while maintaining his membership in the Labour Party. On July 11, he described the alliance as part of efforts to strengthen a political alternative ahead of the 2027 elections. ADC leaders later confirmed that Obi has been part of the coalition since its inception.
Abdullahi added that Obi sought and received approval from coalition leaders to conclude his electoral activities with the LP before formally joining the ADC.
