Labour Party Chairman Assaulted at Abuja Airport, Party Alleges Political Motive

The Labour Party (LP) on Saturday raised alarm following the alleged physical assault of its National Chairman, Julius Abure, by a woman identified as Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama P, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to a statement by the party’s spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, Abure was reportedly standing in line to board a Max Air flight to Benin when Mama P suddenly attacked him. The confrontation, he added, continued onboard despite attempts by flight attendants to intervene, and even persisted after the flight landed in Benin.

“The attacker, a known content creator, refused to heed warnings and continued her assault, recording the incident throughout. It was only the timely intervention of security operatives that ensured the safety of our chairman, while the woman was handed over to the police,” Ifoh said.

The Labour Party expressed outrage after a video allegedly released by the woman surfaced, in which she reportedly boasted of her connections within the police and vowed to continue targeting Abure and other LP officials.

“She claimed that she has contacts with the highest police authorities, and threatened to continue her attacks, blaming us for the alleged decline of the Labour Party since Peter Obi’s departure,” the statement read.

LP described the attack as “a suicidal aggression” and insisted it was politically motivated. The party called on law enforcement to investigate the incident thoroughly and identify the sponsors behind the assault.

“We urge our members to remain calm and avoid retaliation while the police carry out their investigation,” Ifoh added.

Abure has faced leadership challenges since the 2023 elections, with multiple court rulings affirming his position amid disputes over party conventions, caretaker committees, and constitutional interpretation. A Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 had also cast uncertainty over the legality of his continued tenure.
