CP warns Kwara policemen: No more extortion, no more ‘Yahoo boy’ profiling

Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has read the riot act to officers under his command, warning that extortion, illegal phone searches, and profiling of youths as internet fraudsters will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking in Ilorin on Friday at a meeting with senior officers, Ojo said the clampdown on misconduct aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

He declared that erring officers would face the harshest disciplinary measures.

“Any policeman who unlawfully searches phones, interferes in civil disputes, or brands young people as Yahoo boys is committing a grave offence,” he said.

The CP stressed that roadblock phone checks are banned, except where devices are already confirmed as exhibits in criminal investigations. He assured students and youths that their dignity and rights will be protected under his watch.

“The era of intimidation and wrongful profiling is over in Kwara State,” Ojo said.

Meanwhile, the command announced that enforcement of tinted glass permits will commence on October 2. Offenders without valid permits—or those using fake or expired ones—will be prosecuted within 24 hours.

Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi urged motorists to carry their original permits and report any cases of extortion linked to the exercise.
