Kebbi Governor Orders Closure of Yauri Gold Mine After Deadly Clash
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has ordered the immediate suspension of operations at the Mararrabar Birnin Yauri gold mining site in Ngaski Local Government Area following a violent clash that claimed one life.
The governor, who conducted an unscheduled inspection of the mining site on Thursday, directed security agencies to take full control of the area until a lasting resolution is reached between the host communities and the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative (PAGMI).
Governor Idris expressed concern over the marginalisation of Kebbi communities in the mining sector despite owning the land, warning against the influx of foreign miners from Mali, Tanzania, Chad, and Niger.
He also instructed the Ministry of Mining to compile a comprehensive register of all licensed miners and mining firms operating in the state to ensure orderliness and proper regulation of the sector.
In addition, the governor approved the release of about 50 youths who were previously remanded in connection with mining-related violence, urging them to embrace peace and dialogue.
The closure of the Mararrabar Birnin Yauri site underscores the state government’s commitment to maintaining security and protecting local interests in Kebbi’s mineral-rich communities.
