IGP Warns Police Against Using Force for Private Land Disputes

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to refrain from involvement in land disputes and other civil matters.

In a video statement shared on the Force’s official X handle on Thursday, the IGP emphasized that officers “have no business escorting parties for land recovery or intervening in civil disputes without a criminal dimension.”

Egbetokun stressed that such actions compromise the integrity of the Force and tarnish its reputation. He warned that any officer found violating this directive would face disciplinary action.

“Let me state unequivocally: the Nigeria Police Force is not and will never become an enforcer for private interests,” the IGP said. “Engaging in land recovery or interfering in civil cases erodes our neutrality and opens us up to public disrepute. Officers who cross this line will be held accountable.”

The directive aligns with ongoing efforts to reinforce professionalism within the Force and ensure that police intervention is strictly limited to matters with demonstrable criminal elements.
