Osun to Upgrade Cultural Sites, Seek UNESCO Recognition

The Osun State Government has unveiled plans to modernise major cultural tourist sites across Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Ilesa, and Ede, in line with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s agenda to expand the state’s tourism and creative industries.

The administration aims to increase tourist visits to these landmarks by over 60 percent within the next year, leveraging a public-private partnership (PPP) approach to ensure sustainable development. Key sites for upgrade include the Erin Ijesa Waterfalls in Oriade Local Government Area, the Ifá Agbaye Temple in Ile-Ife, the Iwude Ijesa project, and the Sango Timi Shrine, all earmarked for phased development to meet international standards, including UNESCO recognition.

The Osun Osogbo Sacred Grove remains a priority for continued state intervention, with initiatives designed to maintain its status as a globally recognised cultural heritage site.

The governor has mandated strict adherence to budgetary and procurement processes to guarantee transparency. “All projects will follow due process, from budget approval to procurement and implementation. Updates will be posted on the state’s procurement portal to ensure accountability,” said Mallam Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to Governor Adeleke.

Officials noted that the upgrades are part of a broader strategy to diversify Osun’s economy by boosting tourism and showcasing the state’s rich Yoruba cultural heritage.
