Ondo Government Sets Up Task Force to Curb Student Truancy

The Ondo State Government has intensified efforts to check student truancy by warning pupils against roaming the streets during school hours.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Igbekele Ajibefun, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Akure. He disclosed that students found wandering outside school premises during academic hours would be apprehended and subjected to appropriate sanctions.

Ajibefun revealed that a task force, comprising mainly retired principals and teachers, is being established in each of the state’s three Senatorial Districts to monitor and arrest erring students.

“We cannot fight truancy alone. This initiative complements the ministry’s ongoing efforts to ensure discipline in public schools,” the commissioner said.

He added that school heads who fail to enforce discipline would also face sanctions, emphasising the government’s commitment to a total clampdown on truancy across the state.

“The directive comes directly from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration, which is determined to prevent students from roaming the streets during school hours,” Ajibefun stated.

The commissioner urged parents and guardians to collaborate with schools and government agencies to monitor students’ educational progress. He also called on students to remain focused on their academics to meet parental expectations.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has reiterated its commitment to providing quality education and ensuring that every child in Ondo State benefits from a conducive learning environment.
