US Threatens Visa Ban on Corrupt Nigerian Officials
The United States government has warned that corrupt Nigerian officials may face visa restrictions, emphasizing that the fight against corruption transcends national borders.
In a statement on its official X account on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria stated that accountability applies even to high-profile individuals. “Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the statement read.
The US has in the past imposed visa restrictions on politicians accused of undermining democratic processes and engaging in electoral malpractices. The latest warning comes amid rising concerns from transparency advocates over alleged mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office across different levels of government in Nigeria.
Washington affirmed that denying entry to corrupt officials is part of its broader strategy to promote good governance, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law in partner nations.
The US Mission reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives.
