Katsina Peace Talks in Jeopardy as Bandit Leader Attends Armed

Concerns have been raised over the viability of peace talks in Matazu Local Government Area after a notorious bandit leader reportedly attended a dialogue session armed with Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), General Machine Guns (GMGs), and AK-47 rifles.

The meeting, which took place on Saturday, brought together community leaders, Islamic clerics, and representatives of bandit groups, aiming to establish a framework for lasting peace in the area.

Eyewitnesses expressed alarm at the display of sophisticated weaponry during discussions meant to promote harmony.

“You came to a peace talk with AK-47 rifles, RPGs, and GMGs, and you return to the bush with the same weapons. How can this be called a peace deal?” a local leader lamented, highlighting the recurrent attacks that often follow such engagements.

Clerics and local authorities emphasized that any genuine peace initiative requires all parties to lay down arms without preconditions, prioritizing the safety and security of residents above personal or group interests.

Residents have urged the government and security agencies to enforce stronger measures to ensure that future negotiations lead to sustainable peace and the protection of communities in Katsina.
