Kano Government Renames Ministry, Drops ‘Disabled’ Tag
The Kano State Government has officially changed the name of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs.
The move was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf during a recent State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Kano.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi, said the renaming followed a request to replace the term “Disabled” with the more respectful phrase “People with Special Needs.” She described the old terminology as outdated and stigmatizing.
“Nobody is truly disabled everyone has something valuable to contribute,” the Commissioner said, adding that the new name reflects dignity and recognises the potential of all citizens.
She commended Governor Yusuf for his consistent commitment to the welfare of people with special needs. “There has never been a time I met with His Excellency without him asking how people with special needs are faring and how the government can better support them,” she noted.
The Commissioner further stressed that the renaming is not merely symbolic but lays a foundation for reforms aimed at promoting inclusion, empowerment, and equal opportunities for all.
